Bike and Build History
Bike and Build was founded in 2002 by Marc Bush. Marc was a former leader of a Habitat Bicycle Challenge and wanted to expand upon that program. Marc believes that this type of experience empowers young adults to take socially conscious and responsible action. The money each trip raises through this effort enables affordable housing organizations to expand operations and serve more constituents. Additionally, the publicity that each trip generates creates a more informed communal awareness about this issue.
Beginning with two trips in the summer of 2003, Bike & Build has added a trip every year with the support and initiative of a dedicated and passionate base of alumni. Bike & Build aims to continue expanding nationally and to empower a diverse and motivated participant base while directing increased funding and support to grassroots affordable housing efforts. This summer Bike & Build will support six cross-country trips with over 180 participants in an effort to raise over $360,000 for affordable housing projects.
To date over 400 participants have cycled cross-country with Bike & Build, collectively raising over $750,000. In addition, Bike & Build has worked with thousands of Americans to spread awareness about the affordable housing cause. The organization continues to grow as its dedicated program participants and outstanding alumni seek creative ways to continue fundraising, advocating for, and volunteering with affordable housing groups nationwide.
Bike & Build Mission:
Bike & Build is pedaling to end poverty housing. Through fund-raising cycling trips, Bike & Build raises money for and awareness of affordable housing efforts. Our events act as a catalyst to build homes, foster the spirit of service, and empower young adults... mile by mile, house by house.
Guiding Principles
We are young, and we could change the world. Young adults are capable of incredible things. Bike & Build’s events unlock the potential of young adults to do good work. We strive to encourage our participants to test their limits, reach their potential, and affect change. Our energy is contagious, and there is much to be done.
Safety is our top priority. During our events, the health and safety of our participants is paramount. In our first two years, Bike & Build participants cycled an aggregate of 680,000+ miles without a serious injury or accident.
We work on a tight budget. Contributors have a right to demand – and we have a responsibility to ensure – that we be good stewards of the money entrusted to us. We are constantly looking for and implementing innovative ways to increase our effectiveness as a fundraiser.
